Pray with us for the work of Bible Societies around the world

Monday 9 May 2016

Each year, on May 9, Bible Societies across the world, together with churches, friends and supporters, celebrate the United Bible Societies Day of Prayer. This is a cherished and long-held tradition, during which we join in prayer for the Bible cause.

This year’s Day of Prayer is particularly special, as we will be giving thanks to God for his blessings on our work over the past 70 years: on May 9, 1946, representatives from a small group of Bible Societies gathered together in prayerful attitude and decided to form United Bible Societies. Today, the Bible Societies that form this global Fellowship are working in 200 countries and territories translating, publishing and distributing the Bible, helping people to engage with its message and undertaking a wide variety of Bible ministry.

Pray with us throughout the year. Sign up to our monthly prayer letter.

Looking back, we see that there is no limit to what our Great Enabler can do when own plans are submitted to Him. We are humbled, but expectant for more.

When Bible Society friends around the world meet to pray they are in communion with the Lord but also form a community as the family of God. Prayer is part of the Christian life, being equally important, whether it is done in a group or individually. Join this great chain of prayer that brings together thousands of people from all over the world.

Despite the efforts made by our Bible Societies, there are still many people who have not reached by the Word of God. There are many reasons for that, including geographical, political, economic and social difficulties, and religious persecution. It is important to pray for the people involved in overcoming these barriers and also for the work carried out by Bible Societies. They strive to make the Holy Book available to everyone, in a language that they can understand and at a price they can afford.

Join us in giving thanks that 28 languages received Scripture translations for the first time last year (11 full Bibles, 6 New Testaments, and 11 portions of Scripture). As a Bible reader, please remember the 497 million people who speak one of the 3,952 languages that still do not have any Scripture.

As well as joining us in our special 70th anniversary prayer, shared below, please pray for:

  • the increase of Scripture distribution,
  • new translation projects,
  • biblical programs with social impact,
  • the provision of human and financial resources, and
  • the impact of the Bible on people’s lives.

A prayer of thanksgiving

Remember how the Lord your God has blessed you in everything that you have done. (Deuteronomy 2:7)

Father God, on this special day, we give thanks for your many blessings on our work over the past 70 years. We praise you that on May 9, 1946, “moved by the need of the world for the Word of God and by the deep Christian fellowship of those who work together for its spread”, representatives from a small group of Bible Societies agreed to form United Bible Societies.

Thank you Lord, for this legacy. Keep us faithful to the God-inspired vision of our founders, and give us wisdom, energy and inspiration as we continue to work together to make your Word available, known and loved across the world.

Your word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path. (Psalm 119:105)

Through your provision and guidance, Lord, the work of our Fellowship has grown and prospered. We rejoice that we are carrying out Bible mission in partnership with churches in nearly every country on earth. And that you have equipped us for every aspect of Bible work, from translating, publishing and distributing the Bible, to helping people understand and apply its message to their lives.

Thank you, Lord, for the privilege of working for your Kingdom. Refresh us as we seek new ways to share your enduring message of love in a world of constant change.

I chose you and appointed you to go and bear much fruit, the kind of fruit that endures. (John 15:16)

Father, we are so grateful for the people, churches and organisations across the world who make our work possible by praying, volunteering or offering financial support. Many have been faithful supporters of the Bible cause for many years, and we ask you to bless each one of them.

Thank you, Lord, that we do not work alone; you have chosen and appointed many people across the world to share your Word. Help us to provide opportunities for people to carry out the Great Commission of sharing the Good News of your love and redemption.

The gospel keeps bringing blessings and is spreading throughout the world. (Colossians 1:6)

Your Word is alive, Lord! We praise you that it transforms lives and communities, and that we see and hear so many amazing stories of your Word at work around the world. We pray that you continue to bless, inspire, equip and protect everyone working to share the Bible’s message.

This we ask in Jesus’ name.
